Staying physically active benefits both our bodies and our minds. Movement could be anything like; having a meeting walk, pushing your child on a swing, dancing in your kitchen while you cook dinner.
If you are sat down for most of the day, you could start to take regular standing breaks and walk around to stretch your body, you could even set yourself a timer and organise a little reward at the end, such as taking a long shower, bath, or going for a massage.
Heart of England Mencap and Pink Connect are encouraging movement and want our staff and customers to ‘move’ for their mental health.
Exercise is a natural and effective anti-anxiety treatment, it relieves tension, stress, boosts physical self-esteem and mental energy. Better physical health can lead to better mental health. Movement increases your level of motivation, distracting you from worrying thoughts, and improving self-confidence. It can even help you sleep better.
Use physical exercise as an opportunity to meet new people, check out what groups and activities are taking place. Write plans in the diary to help you feel more motivated to move.
Our bodies and minds are connected. Even if you are waiting for things like the kettle to boil or for your children to come out of school, you can use this time to keep moving and doing simple things like marching on the spot or doing some stretches, you will instantly feel better.
Remember, you don’t have to be super sporty to get mental health benefits, focus on your own wellbeing, and don’t feel pressured to keep up with someone else.
