This week Meta has been fined a whopping £1.2bn in regard to illegal data sharing from the EU to US. Meta’s fine is currently the biggest fine seen for General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) for transferring EU user’s data to the US, without obtaining permission from the users. They have been given 5 months to suspend any future transfers that may be in place, and 6 months to stop illegal processing and storage of data in the US.
A new pact is being looked at between the EU and US to enable safe and legal data sharing, however Meta has disclosed that they expect the pact to be completed before they cancel the current illegal data transfers.
