Have you ever wanted to drive away in a swanky new Mercedes-Benz… for free? Well, look no further because all you need is some hoodies, two relay boxes and a helping hand!
These criminals were able to hack into a car, without the keys – but how? The two men in the video can be seen getting out of their car with two relay boxes. Using one of the relay boxes, they were able to pick up the signal of the keys and transmit the signal to the other box, as seen in the video. The only reason this worked is because the owners of the Mercedes have what is called ‘keyless GO’, which allows drivers to enter their vehicle without using their keys. Manufacturers are now in talks with authorities because of the hiccup that they now face with thousands of car owners with keyless entry enabled.
How do you protect yourself from ‘relay crime’?
Many experts are suggesting that you look at buying what’s called a ‘Faraday box/bag’. A Faraday box/bag shields the keys from electromagnetic fields & signals – this means that in the event of an attempted hack on your car keys, the criminals would not be able to make a connection and would be left outside your home, looking more than a bit silly.
Other than a Faraday shield, Mark Silvester (West Midlands Police) says that “To protect against this type of theft, owners can use an additional tested and Thatcham-approved steering lock to cover the entire steering wheel”.
