New Legislation
Driving while using a hand held mobile phone will be a specific offence from 1st December 2003.
Drivers are four times more likely to have an accident whilst using a hand held mobile phone.
Employers will be liable to pay the 'on the spot' fine of £30.00 for staff caught using a hand help mobile, even while outside working hours.
The fine may rise to £1000.00 if contested in court and £2500.00 for drivers of commercial vehicles.
Janet Asherton, the CBI's head of Health & Safety, advised employers to insist staff use 'Hands Free' kits.
