London based charity

We received a call from a London based charity asking about ADSL costs and service, we booked a site visit to discuss their current spend and plans for the future. At that meeting we discovered they had extensive PC, server and network problems, as well as unnecessarily high line, call and ADSL costs. We proposed an IT engineer survey to determine the state of all their equipment (this we did free of charge).

As a result, our report identified a number of network and computer issues that needed urgent attention as well as large cost reductions.

Saving 70% on energy bills

It may be fun, but Christmas can be an expensive time of year for the small business owner. With central heating pumping as the winter kicks in, lights on in every room as the evenings get darker, it’s clear that there’s also a cost – your energy bill.

And yet it’s a very easy overhead to cut by paying less for the energy you use and learning to use less of it. There are around 4.7 million small businesses in the UK. Although many owners run their business from home, around 3 million SMEs have standalone business premises, such as hotels, bars and restaurants. Many of these may be locked into a contract with an energy supplier.

But energy is a cost that it is all too easy for businesses to overlook, says James Pink, managing director of pinkconnect.

Manage cost through understanding your contract situation

Businesses are tied into contracts for utilities supply for up to three years. Did you know that when you reach the end of your contract your utility supplier has the right to roll you into a further two-year contract at price of their choosing? If you do nothing your bills could treble. All contracts have a specified notice period and if you did not give notice “in time” in “the right form of words” you may be tied into continuing service with the same supplier but at a price of their choosing, never in your best interest!

How can you prevent this roll over into a new contract? Simple, make sure you send a good utilities broker a copy of your bills. They will make a note of your contract dates on their system and they can let you know when your renewal date is coming up and move you to the best supplier for you at that time.

For a good broker with sensible advice and best prices.

How to reduce energy consumption without investment

There are some amazingly clever developments in energy efficiency coming onto the market that can cut energy bills, but often it is hard to find out what is available if it is not part of your day job to research savings and let’s admit most of us are too busy to do so.

My favorite energy saving tool of the moment is a very clever boiler device that maximises the efficiency of your existing boilers (new or old) and which will reduce both your annual consumption of business gas / oil / LPG and carbon emissions. The good news is that annual consumption reductions are GUARANTEED often by as much as 25% (subject to a site-survey of the plant / boiler rooms). There is no capital outlay as the system is rented. For registered companies the rental costs can be 100% reclaimed against tax.

Energy Efficiency

A recent survey conducted in the US asked 1,400 business executives what they think of energy efficiency. It is clearly important to many of them.

Seventy one percent said they pay more attention to energy efficiency than they did a year ago; 51 percent see energy management as extremely or very important; 45 percent plan to use efficiency as their top strategy to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
